Sokka struggles in early seasons with traits of toxic masculinity, but as he matures and interacts with more of the world, he grows out of this. Similar to his feminist awakening so to speak, it would have been easy to imagine him also getting rid of the idea that he had to be straight. The Kyoshi warriors were created by Kyohsi who is actually a character from the series who was confirmed to be bisexual although outside of the show.

The fact that these warriors are a group of women who live and work so closely together means that likely some of them would have been queer. Just like with Firelord Sozin, Avatar Roku is another character who can be read as straight in that story. He does fall in love with and marry a woman named Ta Min, but it seems that his relationship with Sozin was also extremely intense and influential. The complicated nature of their relationship as friends could easily have translated into something more romantic.

Zuko is definitely a fan-favorite character from the Avatar: The Last Airbender because of his angst, his redemption storyline, and his brooding good looks. Because of this, he is shipped with many people from the series other than just Mai. This would have been an interesting journey to explore with the character, and there are some people who ship him with Sokka and even occasionally with Jet.

Ty Lee is a character that has recently been discussed as possibly being queer by new and old fans of the series.

Their relationship is clearly toxic, but the hold Azula has over Ty Lee seems more intense and deeper than her friendship with Mai. Of course, a person can go against gender roles and stereotypes and still be straight, but there was an opportunity here to explore possibly a different sexuality or gender identity for Toph.
